Callie surfaced from the lukewarm ocean with Nate. She pushed her goggles up over the skin of her scuba diving suit and eyed the islands surrounding the lagoon where they floated.

Several clusters of light broke the gloom of a low land mass to the east. One of them was centered around the faint outline of the Runit Dome, the four-hundred-feet-wide, concrete capsule enclosing the radioactive debris from the nuclear experiments carried out on the Enewetak Atoll by the U.S. government during the middle of the previous century.

“We’re almost out of time,” Nate said.

Callie glanced at the vessel behind them and the armed men and women manning its deck. Their super soldier escort was indistinguishable in the gloom where they stood amidst the military team monitoring their activities.

“I know. One last dive and I think we’re done.” She smiled at Nate. “You ready, big guy?”

Nate pressed a kiss to her lips that made her toes curl. “Always.”
